One of my favorite June in Italy times was a Golden Days in Sperlonga, a beach town in Lazio, easily reached from Rome.
My dear Roman friend Gioia, first told me about Sperlonga: “It’s where we all had our first boyfriends,” she said, with a dreamy look in her eyes…With Gioia as my cicerone=guide, I landed in all the right places…
The bella Hotel Corallo, the only hotel at the top of the old town, where Salvatore and his family welcomed me…
The village is an enchanting mix of stairways and alleys, with shops, restaurants, and caffes…
Down below are the beaches, set up in heavenly order, with beach beds and umbrellas. Gioia led me to her favorite, Lido di Rocco, where we scored a spot in Row 3…
The sea was calm and warm and shallow….perfect for families and the kiddies…
The beach restaurant is a dream…mozzarella from nearby Naples in the Caprese salad, fresh fish salad…
AND for even more magic, there’s the Museo Archaeologico, next to the grotto where Emperor Tiberius, before he left for Capri, had a villa built and his grotto filled with mythological statues…
In the evening, sitting in the piazza with a spritz at Caffe Trani is the perfect ending to a Golden Day…
Plus The Sunsets!
HOW TO GET THERE: Train from Rome to Fondi-Sperlonga, then a short bus ride from the stazione — or a taxi costs 25 euros.
Wishing you all a happy summer… and I hope you get to Sperlonga before too long…
